The Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 have been announced by Google earlier today,
alongside Android 5.0 Lollipop, the new updated operating system. Google
has also launched a new Android TV media player, called Nexus Player.
The announcement happened on Google’s official blog, sadly without an
event. The two new devices will be Google’s showpieces for 2014 and the
best-part of 2015, the Nexus 6 developed in partnership with Motorola,
the Nexus 9 with HTC and the Nexus Player with ASUS.
The Motorola Nexus 6 looks like a blown-up version of the Moto X
(2014 Edition) with the same metal frame, soft-touch back and minimalist
front. The difference is the Moto X has a 5.2-inch full HD display,
while the Nexus 6 has a 6-inch QHD display, with a 2560 x 1440
resolution.
This is pretty big for a smartphone, but it doesn’t stop there,
Google has packed the Nexus 6 with powerful internals. Starting with the
2.7GHz Snapdragon 805 CPU, 3GB of RAM and Adreno 420 GPU. The Nexus 6
also has a 3220mAh battery for a good few days without charge.
Google has added a 13MP OIS camera on the back of the device and dual-front facing speakers, for excellent photos and audio.
The newly released Android Lollipop update will come first to the
Nexus 6. This brings a new design language, called Material Design,
better notifications and faster multi-tasking, on top of other changes
to make the OS even better and more comprehensive.
No word on price or international availability. Google will start
pre-orders sometime this month, with a release date of October 29.
Google also announced the Nexus 9 today, in partnership with HTC.
This is the first tablet HTC has developed ever since the HTC Flyer
disaster in 2011. The new tablet has a minimal design, with a metallic
frame on the side and rather large bezels on the front.
Again, Google is banking on killer specs to win the battle for tablet
lover’s hearts. They have packed a Nvidia Tegra K1 processor and 3GB of
RAM onto the Nexus 9, alongside a 8.9-inch IPS display (unknown
resolution).
Google has added Android Lollipop on the Nexus 9 as well. We can see
the appeal of the tablet, but it will all come down to price whether
this is a best-seller or another niche Android tablet.
Pre-orders will start on October 17, the Nexus 9 will launch on November 3.
