How to Heal Breast Implants

In 2010, nearly 300,000 women received breast implants in the United States alone, making breast augmentation the nation's most sought after cosmetic surgical procedure. Breast implants are surgically placed under the skin of a woman's breasts to make them larger or fuller. Breast implants also can be used to make uneven breasts the same size as each other. After breast augmentation, the breasts can take several weeks to heal. Follow these steps on how to heal breast implants.

Steps

Listen to your doctor. Instructions for recovery are distributed by the doctor on a case by case basis. Based on your age, physical attributes and health issues your doctor will tell you what you're allowed and not allowed to do in the weeks following your surgery.

Avoid doing anything involving excessive force, abrasion or motion, such as lifting heavy items, playing tennis or jumping on a trampoline. This is important because you don't want to put the surgical incisions or new implants under any undue stress or strain.

Take medicine. After surgery, you will be prescribed medication to apply directly on the scars or take orally to aid healing and/or reduce pain. The medication also will reduce the risk of infection to your enhanced breasts.

  • Spread the doctor prescribed topical medication on the scars and breasts. This will help heal the breast scars and tissue externally. Some topical medications also numb the pain resulting from the surgery.
  • Take the doctor prescribed oral medication. This will help to heal the breast scars and tissue internally, as well as provide pain relief.
Apply a moisturizer that contains shea butter to your breasts. After breast implant surgery, your breasts can become red, hot or shiny because the skin has been stretched. By applying shea butter, you can prevent the skin from developing stretch marks.

Wear a supportive bra that reduces breast movement. The best type of bra for this would be a sports/athletic bra. Keeping your augmented breasts as motionless as possible will help you heal faster. A bra lacking the required support will result in undue stress and strain on your new implants.

Sleep on your back up to 10 days after surgery. Applying pressure to your breasts by sleeping on top of them after surgery can cause broken incisions, resulting in undue pain and return trips to the doctor to repair the incisions.

Tips

  • If you have any questions during your breast surgery recovery period, consult your doctor.
  • Most plastic surgeons offer free consultations to potential patients. Talk to a doctor and find out if the process of getting breast implants is something you're prepared to do. The surgery can be painful and the recovery time lasts several weeks.
